Toyota’s Way Forward Fund and Driscoll Children’s Hospital Seek to Improve Care in Corpus Christi Schools
As a mobility company, Toyota is interested in ensuring nothing holds a child back from exploring and interacting with the world, which is why Toyota’s Way Forward Fund (WFF) brings together and supports the people and organizations working to get the best care in the hands of children and families.
For families impacted by common, but often overlooked childhood injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), the WFF is focused on raising awareness around these injuries, helping to advance research and innovation, and improving access to resources and care in communities around the country.
One recent major step towards that goal was a WFF grant to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi for $525,000 to improve access to concussion care in local schools.
Every year, 2.8 million Americans are impacted by a traumatic brain injury, including a disproportionate number of children. TBIs can range from occurrences like concussions to more serious injuries. Chances are you know someone in your community who has experienced a TBI. Despite their frequency, there’s a significant gap in knowledge, resources, funding, and care.
The WFF grant will create Driscoll’s Heads Up: Concussion Care for Kids Program at London ISD. The new concussion care program is an initiative to support people impacted by significant injuries, starting with a focus on children recovering from traumatic brain injury.
Phase two of the program will expand to other school districts, further increasing access to care for students across the community. As part of the program, specialized training will empower school staff and families to make informed decisions about an athlete’s health, ensuring that student safety remains the top priority both on and off the field.
According to National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), TBI is a major pediatric health condition that is often under-recognized, and urgent and long-term care are often under-resourced. We know no one person has all the answers but working together we can make a difference.
